LETTER: Second PET scanner is more than we can afford

Graham Downey-Sutton, the NL NDP candidate for Corner Brook, said people can’t wait another four, five or six years to get a PET scanner in the city. Downey-Sutton organized a protest Monday calling on the Liberals to make good on a promise to put a scanner in the new regional hospital being constructed here.

This province’s population barely justifies having one PET scanner, let alone two. That money would be much better spent on providing primary health care to the 90,000 persons in the province who don’t have a family doctor; more effective, more efficient, more persons served, more “bang for the buck.”

The PET scanner was a commitment made in 2014 when we had (slightly) more money than we have now. Things change and hard decisions must be made to better manage both our debt and our finances. Government needs to say no to that PET scanner, to spend our money better and more wisely.
