LETTER: Seniors missing out on activities

On Sept. 24 I sent a letter titled “Seniors, the forgotten people” to all MHAs, the town council of Conception Bay South, Paradise and all the news media.

Seniors are the people who built this province have lived through many pandemics, knew how to deal with them and live. They are a tough and hardy bunch.

Since March 13, 2020, many of their activities have been stopped — we’re not allowed to gather to play cards, there are limits on playing darts — with the latter only allowed as of a few days ago.

Worsley Park, a building of 2,400 square feet, can accommodate only 21 people playing darts, and no one is allowed to play cards there. All these seniors have not had the virus and none of their families have had it, so what is the danger?

Our province is pretty well nil when it comes to COVID-19, but this government has been, and still is, ruling by fear.

I played darts last Friday for the first time since the closure and it did me a world of good (mentally). Now it’s time to get back to cards so that our seniors can be active and the many clubs can start getting some badly needed revenue to pay their bills.

In the previous letter I suggested that the politicians, municipal and provincial, get together with us and plan a way to get this done.

So far I have not heard from anyone that is interested enough to do this for the seniors.

Remember, we are the ones who gave you your jobs, so do what you’re elected to do.

Hope everyone is doing well!

Capt. Wilfred Bartlett, retired

Green Bay South

Editor’s note: At the time this letter was edited, the provincial government had just announced three new cases of COVID-19, bringing the total number of active cases in the province to 12.
