Brian Jones’ Sept. 15 call for a new strategy to stop highway carnage prompts me to reply that there already exists a good one, certainly much better than his proposed after-the-fact advisories which would amount to mere hand-wringing and scolding the dead.
A couple of years ago, when my brother-in-law was taking us to the airport in northern England, he felt compelled to explain why he was only going 55 miles per hour. It was 3:30 in the morning, the roads were bare, the weather fine and there was almost no traffic. But, said he, there were radar guns and cameras set up in random places. If you went too fast you got a ticket in the mail (or over there, the post). Why don’t we too catch all the speeders, all the time, in all conditions, with no extra work for the police?
