Amazing as it is, it would seem Justin Trudeau still has a very real chance of being re-elected Prime Minister of Canada.
Should this happen, and he visits other countries, with what moral authority will he speak – especially to leaders of colour?
With what moral authority will he talk to them about being inclusive and improving the human rights of people in their country?
During his first term as prime minister, when he travelled the world, he carried our pride with him. For the next four years, he will carry our shame. Each person he meets will see before them a man who wore blackface for his own personal entertainment. Each person he meets will be reminded that Canada is a country which rewarded — with the highest office in the land — a man who committed racist acts. This stain on Canada will not begin to disappear until another man or woman is elected to this once honourable office.
