St. John’s hockey star Abby Newhook will dress for Team Atlantic at the national under-18 female championship next month in Manitoba.

Newhook, 16, is a second-year forward at Tabor Academy prep school, south of Boston.

She has already signed a letter of commitment to attend Boston College, beginning in 2021-22.

Her older brother, Alex, is a freshman with the Eagles and first-round draft pick of the NHL’s Colorado Rockies.

The Canadian women’s U18 championship runs from Nov. 5-9 in Winkler and Morden, Man.

In addition to Newhook, Stephanie Delaney of Logy Bay has been named as one of head coach David Genevieve’s assistant coaches.

Delaney, 27, has been coaching since she was 20 when she started out at Gonzaga high school. Last year, she was part of the women’s hockey coaching staff at Ridley College in St. Catharines, Ont., where Shailynn Snow of Clarke’s Beach was on the prep school’s women’s roster.

This season, Delaney is helping coach a Don Johnson league bantam squad in St. John’s with John Barrington Jr. and Sr.

Newhook is the only player from Newfoundland and Labrador on the 20-player Team Atlantic roster. The squad features 11 Nova Scotians, seven from New Brunswick and one each from P.E.I. and Newfoundland.
