Whether it was an abbreviated contest or a full-length tilt, the Memorial Sea-Hawks got the better of the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Atlantic University Sport women’s basketball play over the weekend in St. John’s.
The Sea-Hawks evened their early-season record to 2-2 at the Field House on Sunday afternoon, downing the Huskies 85-75. The result came a day after Memorial had prevailed 68-42 in a contest cut short by a widespread power outage early in the fourth quarter.
On Sunday, Memorial got 22 points from Sydney Stewart and 21 from Sydney Ezekiel as it overcame a four-point, first quarter deficit, The Sea-Hawks took the lead on a couple of Stewart free throws midway through the second quarter and maintained it throughout.
Haillie Nickerson came off the bench to contribute 19 points in 22 minutes of floor time for Memorial and added a half-dozen rebounds, tying her with Rosie Stanoev for the team lead in that department.
Ezekiel had a team-leading five assists.
Alaina MacMillan, with 17 points, and Jose Gascoigne, with 16, were the top scorers for the winless Huskies (0-4) on Sunday. Gascoigne also had a game-high none rebounds.
On Saturday, the Lady Hawks had led from the get-go, getting 19 points and eight rebounds from Stewart. Brooklyn Wright chipped in with 17 for the winners,, while Ezekiel added 14.
Nickerson once again headed the effort off the bench with 13 points and a team-leading nine boards.
Memorial might have gotten even bigger contributions from non-starters had the power outage not occurred in the first minute of the fourth quarter, just after Sea-Hawks head coach Mark English had put many of his second-rotation players on the floor.
Estelle Eduardo topped Saint Mary’s with nine points.
The Sea-Hawks will play at home again next weekend as they host the Acadia Axewomen (3-1) at the Field House.
