Golfer Mike Furlong is The Telegram sports department’s choice as athlete of the week.
Furlong of St. John’s led wire-to-wire to win the men’s amateur division at the 2018 Atlantic golf championship at the Glen Arbour course outside Halifax.
Furlong, Golf Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2017 male golfer of the year from Bally Haly Country Club, won the crown with a two-day total of 153, two strokes over teammate Brad Slaney.
The win provides Furlong with a spot in the 2019 Canadian Amateur championships.
In the team competition, Furlong and Slaney combined for a score of 304 to win the Amateur division title by 10 strokes over New Brunswick.
