Rosie Stanoev sank 23 points, 21 of them on the strength of her three-point shooting, as the Memorial Sea-Hawks downed the St. Francis Xavier X-Women 87-66 in Atlantic University Sports women’s basketball action this afternoon at the MUN Field House in St. John’s.
Stanoev went seven-for-nine on three-pointers as the Sea-Hawks posted their second win in as many days over the visiting X-Women; they won 70-59 Saturday. The results push Memorial (4-2) into a tie for second place in the Atlantic conference behind the undefeated Acadia Axewomen (6-0). The Sea-Hawks’ two losses came in their season-openers at Acadia.
Sydney Stewart added 17 points for Memorial, while Brooklyn Wright, who led the way with 17 points and 10 rebounds Saturday, registered 15 points in the rematch.
Haley Nickerson came off the bench and grabbed nine rebounds for Memorial today, while Cameron Longley, another non-starter, had eight boards for the Sea-Hawks, all on the offensive end.
The Memorial women finish up their pre-Christmas schedule with a pair of games against the University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds next weekend in Fredericton. Those contests loom large because UNB is the team tied with MUN in the standings. What’s more, each game is worth four points seeing as these will be the only regular-season matchups between he two sides in 2017-18.
