The Bigs St. John’s Capitals dropped their opening game at the Baseball Canada senior men’s nationals Thursday with a 6-1 setback to Quebec in Victoria, B.C.

Greg Barry (4IP, 5R, 8H, 2K, 1W) started and was tagged with the loss. Mattie Murphy and Sean Janes also saw mound duty.

The Caps managed only three hits, by Trevor Clarke, who doubled off the wall to lead off the game, Parker Gulliver and Dave Penney, and scored their only run on a wild pitch.

“We had our chances, but had some hard hit balls at guys for outs,” said St. John’s coach Sean Gulliver. “We played flawless defensively. Trevor Clarke and Brent Power made a couple of highlight reel plays at short and second.”

The Caps take on Alberta 7:30 tonight (NL time), with Dan Connors getting the start on the hill.

Meanwhile, the news was better in Oshawa, Ont., at the Ray Carter Cup Canadian 15-years and under championship.

Newfoundland and Labrador shaded Nova Scotia on opening day Thursday with Keegan Stuckless of C.B.S. enjoying a three-for-three night at the plate. The winners scored four runs in the third inning, with Stuckless and Mason Norris collecting two RBIs apiece.

Devon Murphy (6IP, 4R, 8H, 6K, 1W) pitched the win.

Earlier in the day, Newfoundland and Labrador was shut out 10-0 by Saskatchewan. Stuckless had Newfoundland’s only hit. Alexander French suffered the loss.

At the girls’ 16-years and under invitational in Bedford, N.S., Newfoundland and Labrador defeated Nova Scotia 2 9-7 on Maddi Healy’s two-run double in the top of the seven inning, breaking a 7-7 tie.

Andrea Turner got the win in relief.
