Clarke, Flynn lead N.L. bantams to win over Manitoba

Nathan Flynn of Mount Pearl scrambled home from third base to score what would stand as the winning run in the fifth inning as Newfoundland and Labrador’s bantam boys team edged Manitoba 3-2 Friday at the Ray Carter Cup national boys under-15 baseball championship in Summerside, P.E.I.

The result evened Newfoundland’s record at 1-1.

Flynn’s run backed an impressive complete-game pitching performance by Aaron Clarke of Conception Bay South, who scattered seven hits, allowed two walks and struck out seven while allowing just a single earned run.

Alex French of Mount Pearl and Devon Ryan of St. John’s each had two hits for Newfoundland, which finishes up its round-robin schedule with games against the other two entries from the Prairie Provinces — Alberta and Saskatchewan — today.
