The Corner Brook Barons couldn’t quite own the weekend completely against the St. John’s Capitals, but two out of three ain’t bad.
Following a 5-4 win in Game 1 and an 8-4 decision in Game 2 on Saturday, the Barons fell 8-3 to the Capitals on Sunday at Jubilee Field, but still hold the 2-1 edge in the best-of-seven provincial senior A baseball championship series.
The series shifts to St. John’s next weekend.
On Sunday, Scott Stockley provided the power for the Capitals in the win, picking up two runs and an RBI in a 3-for-4 day at the dish. Redmond Hunt was also a factor, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Greg Sharpe and Steve Hynes were both 2-for-4 for the Barons, with a run scored each.
Greg Barry pitched the win, going 5.2 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits. He had a walk and two strikeouts. Ben Murphy pitched the other 1.1 innings, striking out two batters.
The loss went to Matt Colbourne, who surrendered seven runs (three earned) on 10 hits over six innings. He recorded three strikeouts and three walks. AJ Whiffen gave up a run on two hits in one inning of work.
In Game 1 on Saturday, Whiffen hit a solo walkoff homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning to give the Barons the win. He finished 1-for-2. Sharpe was 2-for-3, scoring once and driving in a pair.
Andrew Paul put up a 3-for-4 stat line for the Caps, scoring once.
Whiffen was the winning pitcher with two strikeouts and a walk in two innings. Michael Tavenor pitched the bulk of the game, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits. He struck out four and walked two.
Ben Murphy took the loss for the Caps in 2.1 innings on the mound, where he gave up a run on two hits. Mattie Murphy allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits, with three walks and two strikeouts through five innings.
In Game 2, Brian Bennett pitched the win as the Barons doubled up the Caps 8-4.
Bennett was tagged for three runs (two earned) on seven hits in four innings, with three walks and a strikeout. Riley King threw three innings, allowing one run on two hits. He struck out three.
Ryan Morgan took the loss in one inning of action that saw him rocked for eight runs (seven earned) on three hits. He struck out three and walked three. Danny Rice played the remainder of the game, striking out four, walking two, and giving up four hits.
Steve Sheppard was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored for the Barons, with Greg Whelan chipping in for two RBIs and a run scored in a 2-for-2 outing.
Bernie Madden and Brent Power were both 2-for-4 for the Caps, with Madden scoring a run and Power collecting an RBI.
