The St. John’s Molson Senior Baseball League kicks off its post-season Monday with a pair of games slated for St. Pat’s Ball Park.
First-place Gonzaga Vikings tangle with fourth-place Knights in the first game at 6 p.m., followed by the nightcap at 8:30 featuring the second- and third-place teams, Holy Cross and Shamrocks.
The semifinals are best-of-five affairs. Shamrocks are the two-time defending champs.
The regular season wound up Saturday at St. Pat’s with Gonzaga outscoring Holy Cross. Blair Rogers (1IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB) recorded the win with an inning of relief. Keith Spurrell (6IP, 8H, 8R, 3ER, 1BB, 2K, 1HB) started.
Brent Power (5.2IP, 12H, 9R, 6ER, 4BB, 1HB) was tagged with the loss, with relief help from Danny Rice (0.2IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 1K).
Andrew Paul had a big game for Gonzaga with a four-for-five performance at the plate, which included two singles, two doubles, four RBIs, a run scored and a stolen.
Steve Barrett collected two hits for the Crusaders.
Knights slipped past Shamrocks 4-3 in the other game to secure the final playoff spot. Knights entered the game tied with Feildians after the Double Blues scored a 9-7 win over Holy Cross Friday night, a continuation of a game from July 23.
Matt Sullivan (7IP, 8H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 4K) went the distance to secure the win over Matt Murphy (2IP, 5H, 4R, 2ER, 2BB, 1K). Grant Kenny (5IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 3BB, 3K) pitched in relief.
Shawn Beson had two hits for the winners, with a couple of RBIs, and Parker Gulliver had two hits for the Shammies.
In Friday’s game, Jimmy Locke had three hits, knocked in two runs and scored a pair for Feildians. Riley King (2IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 0K) got the win in relief of starter Ryan Harnett (6IP, 7H, 7R, 6ER, 10BB, 5K, 1HB).
Gerry Stone (1IP, 4H, 2R, 1ER, 0BB, 0K), the third Holy Cross pitcher, suffered the loss.
Dean Norman had four hits in a losing cause.
