The Shammies drew first blood in the St. John’s Molson Senior Baseball League final, taking Game 1 of the best-of-seven series 2-1. Game 2 goes 6 p.m. Thursday, with Games 3 and 4 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Goosney (7IP, 4H, 1ER, 1HR, 0BB, 2K) twirled the win over Connors (6IP, 6H, 2R, 1ER, 2BB, 5K) Tuesday.

Shamrocks opened scoring in the bottom of the first when Trevor Clarke doubled, stole third and then scampered home when the ball sailed into left field. The green and gold plated what would be the winning run in the third when Jay Warford singled, stole second and took third on a groundout. He crossed home plate on Andrew Symonds’s sac fly.

Gonzaga kept things close when Peter Madden homered in the fifth.

Scott Stockley of Shamrocks was the game’s top batter with two hits.
