Veteran Ward Gosse pitched a five-inning, one-hit shutout and Matt Power drove in four of his team’s runs as the Roebothan McKay Marshall Republic blanked Sportscraft Waterford Valley 8-0 in Molson St. John’s intermediate softball play at Lions Park Wednesday.

Gosse struck out 11 and didn’t walk a batter in the game shortened by application of the league’s seven-run mercy rule.

Besides Power, RMM’s top batters included Trevor Hefferan and Corey Drake each had two hits, while Andrew Temple scored two runs.

Waterford Valley starter John Webber took the loss, giving up five runs before being relieved in the second inning.

Brandon Pomroy had the only hit for the losers, a fifth-inning single.

In Wednesday’s other game, Logan Power (4H, 1HBP, 3W, 4K) pitched a complete game as the Conception Bay South Storm doubled Lafontaine Club 6-3.

It was the first setback of the season for Placentia-based Lafontaine (7-1)

Mitch Stack, who drove in two runs, was one of three batters for second-place C.B.S. (7-4) with two hits, joining Paul Smith Jr. and Tyler McDonald.

Brent Hatfield (6IP, 11H, 3W) took the loss.

Joel Nash had two hits, scored two runs and had two outfield assists, both in the fifth inning, when he threw out a pair of runners at third base.

The intermediate league takes a break from its regular-season schedule as teams participate in the 22nd Molson Swing Into Summer tournament, set to begin Friday evening at Lions Park.
