Vikes grab lead; Shammies advance in senior baseball

Dan Connors pitched four shutout innings in relief as the RMM Gonzaga Vikings slipped past Knights 4-3 in 10 innings Thursday night for a 2-1 lead in their St. John’s Molson senior baseball semifinal.

The Vikings lead the best-of-five series 2-1 with Game 4 set for 1 p.m. Sunday at Smallwood Drive Ball Park.

In the other series, Shamrocks completed a three-game sweep of Holy Cross with a 4-1 win Thursday night.

At St. Pat’s Ball Park, Connors came in the seventh inning and allowed only three hits while fanning five. He walked two. Scott Hynes (6IP, 8H, 3R, 1ER, 0BB, 2K) started. Matt Sullivan (9.1IP, 8H, 4R, 3ER, 4BB, 1K) was tagged with the loss.

Aging veteran Troy Croft had a pair of hits for the winners, and Sullivan had two hits for the Knights.

Mattie Murphy scattered six hits over six-plus inning, walked one and fanned five, and Scott Goosney closed things out throwing a third of an inning for the defending champion Shamrocks, who advanced to the final.

Gerry Stone (6IP, 7H, 4ER, 4BB, 1K) was tagged with the loss.

Trevor Clarke collected three hits for the winners, while Justin Kelly had a pair in a losing cause.
