National U15, U17 hoop tourneys under way

The women’s under-17 team and the men’s U15 squad are 1-1 after opening-day play in the national basketball championships for those age groups.

The women’s U15 and men’s U17 teams are both winless in two games.

The girls’ championships are in Victoria, B.C., while the boys’ championships are being staged in Fredericton, N.B.

In Victoria, the U17 women split a pair games Monday, beating Nova Scotia 73-65 after losing 94-57 to Saskatchewan. In the Nova Scotia game, Victoria Strickland scored 17 points for the winners, and Alana Lee netted 14.

In Moncton, the boys’ U15 squad dropped an 80-60 game to Manitoba before rebounding with a 68-62 win over New Brunswick. Mark Tobin scored 17 points for the winners, and Miguel Bunleon hooped 16.

The U17 boys lost twice, a 112-54 humiliation to Manitoba before a 95-70 loss to New Brunswick.

The U15 girls lost 79-43 to New Brunswick, and were beaten up 76-20 by Alberta.

Play continues today in both cities.
