Carolina Hurricanes return Newfoundlander Clark Bishop to the minors

Demotion of centre from St. John’s means, once again, there are no players from this province in the NHL

After appearing in seven games for the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes this fall, Clark Bishop has been returned to the Charlotte Checkers, the Hurricanes’ AHL farm team.
Clark Bishop, who was Newfoundland and Labrador’s only player in the National Hockey League this season, has been returned to the minors.

The 22-year-old centre from St. John’s was reassigned by the Hurricanes to the American Hockey League’s Charlotte Checkers in order to make roster room for fifth-year forward Victor Rask, who was coming off Carolina’s injured reserve list.

The 25-year-old Rask hasn’t played this season after undergoing surgery in September to repair an injury suffered when he was preparing a meal in his kitchen.

Bishop’s demotion ends his second stint with the Hurricanes this fall. In all, he has played seven NHL games, with four penalty minutes and a plus-one rating for Carolina. And even though he had no point with the ‘Canes, he had good reviews for his performance in his primary role as a defensive forward, which should mean he’ll remain at top of mind whenever Carolina needs another forward from Charlotte.

Before Bishop was called up to the Hurricanes in October, no Newfoundland hockey player had appeared on an NHL roster since defenceman Adam Pardy of Bonavista had a brief stay with the Nashville Predators during the 2016-17 season.

Bishop was in the Checkers’ lineup for Wednesday-night home game against the Belleville Senators. He headed into the contest having registered three goals, two assists and a plus-four rating in nine AHL games this season.

This is the third pro campaign for Bishop, who was selected by the Hurricanes in the fifth round, 127th overall, in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft following four seasons with the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. For whom he was a two-year captain.

In 2017-18, Bishop has seven goals and 21 assists in Charlotte, after splitting the previous season between the Checkers and Florida Everblades of the ECHL.
