GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR, NL — When the final buzzer sounded, the Southern Shore Breakers were more than a little bruised in spirit after facing one of the most dominant senior hockey teams, the Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts.
In their first home game of the season at the Joe Byrne Arena, the Cataracts proved once again why they are one of the superior teams in senior hockey in this province.
The Cataracts lost no time in making their mark, as Brandon Hynes served up the first point goal of the night. Danny Wicks also added one in the first, to give the Cats a 2-0 lead going into the second.
Hynes came out firing early in the second, potting his second goal of the night. Travis Champion and David Byrne added one each to give the Cats a comfortable 5-0 lead going into the third.
The Breakers managed to get one past A.J. Whiffen early in the third, but that was all they could muster.
Kyle McGuirk scored twice in the third period, and Champion scored his second of the night to seal it up 8-1 in front of the hometown fans.
Tonight’s game was part of the first set of interlocking games between teams in the Central West league and the Avalon Senior Hockey league.
In Gander, the Flyers pulled off a 7-2 win over the East Coast Conception Bay Blues.
Tomorrow the Cats meet the Blues while the Flyers take on the Breakers.
