The St. John’s Edge salvaged a split with the Halifax Hurricanes, winning 108-97 Wednesday night in front of 2,553 hoops fans at Mile One Centre.
It was the third win in four National Basketball League of Canada home games this month for the Edge, who improved to 21-12. The Hurricanes, who came into Wednesday’s contest tops in the Atlantic Division and the league, now sit at 22-11.
For English, the league’s leading scorer, it was his second straight game on the bench in street clothes as the Patrick’s Cove product rests some barking muscles after a particularly physical two-game series last weekend against the KW Titans, which saw the Edge come away with a sweep.
Wednesday night at Mile One, it was newcomers who stepped up for the Edge, including 6-7 Xavier Ford, who dropped 25 points and pulled down nine rebounds.
Ford, a University of Buffalo product who was signed last month, played in the G-League and most recently in Europe.
Ryan Reid, making his second straight after being added to the roster last month, scored 22 points and grabbed seven boards.
The 31-year-old Reid, who stands 6-7 and played university ball at Florida State, enjoyed a stint with the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder in 2011-12.
Coron Williams added 18 points and Charles Hinkle chipped in with 16 for the Edge, who have two days off before playing host to the defending champion London Lightning Saturday and Sunday.
