Brian Wiseman spent only one hockey season in St. John’s, with the 1996-97 St. John’s Maple Leafs, but it was during that American Hockey League campaign the speedy centreman proved himself to be one of the best to ever wear a St. John’s jersey.
Wiseman scored 33 goals and 95 points that year — tied for third in AHL scoring with Vaclav Prospal — and appeared in three games with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
It would be Wiseman’s only National Hockey League experience, a 5-7 forward considered too small back then.
However, Wiseman is back in the NHL, hired by the Edmonton Oilers as an assistant coach Tuesday after spending eight seasons as an assistant with the University of Michigan.
The Chatham, Ont,. native played four years at Michigan in the early 90s.
Wiseman joins Dave Tippett’s coaching staff with associate coach Jim Playfair, fellow assistant Glen Gulutzan, goaltending coach Dustin Schwartz and video coach Jeremy Coupal.
He has a relationship with Tippett, having worked as a video coach for the Dallas Stars when Tippett was the head coach.
