Brad Gushue and his St. John’s rink will look to continue what had been a remarkable run of success as they take on Nikas Edin’s Swedish fousome in today’s final of the Masters, the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling event being held in Lloydminster, Sask.
Gushue, third Mark Nichols, second Brett Gallant and lead Geoff Walker are 6-0 at the Masters, including a 7-1 win over Kevin Koe of Calgary in a Saturday-night semifinal.
That record is part of a 19-game winning streak this month for Gushue and Co., which went 7-0 in taking the Swiss Cup Basel and 6-0 in claiming the title in the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard.
So far this season, the Gushue rink has a 28-3 overall record and three titles — the rink was 7-0 in taking the first Grand Slam event, the Tour Challenge and finished 2-3 at the Shorty Jenkins Classic, where it didn’t make the playoffs.
Overall, Gushue and Co. have outscored their opponents 208-107.
This afternoon’s matchup (2:30 p.m. NT) will between the teams that top the world team rankings, with Gushue first and Edin second. They are also both past winners of the Masters — Edin is defending champion, while Gushue captured the title in 2014.
Today’s women’s final at the Masters will feature two Manitoba rinks, those skipped by Jennifer Jones and Kerri Einarson.
