Two rinks from St. John’s begin play today at the 2018 Travelers Curling Club Championship in Miramichi, N.B.
Former Newfoundland and Labrador Tankard-winning skip Lorne Henderson heads up a men’s team from the Re/Max Centre that also includes Neil Power, Scott Henderson and Dave Dawe. Also from the Re/Max Centre is the women’s team skipped by Pam Osborne and also including Jennifer Gallagher, Barb Dawson and Karen Harvey.
The Newfoundland women play their first game this afternoon against Nova Scotia, while the men open their preliminary-round schedule this evening versus the Northwest Territories.
The Travelers is considered the national second tier championship, as each team is allowed only one player who has played in a provincial/territorial junior, men’s (Brier), women’s (Scotties) or senior championship in the current or previous four curling seasons, or participated in a full-field Grand Slam event in the current or previous four curling seasons.
As well, no player on the teams can have played in a Canadian junior, men’s, women’s or senior national championship in the current or previous four seasons.
Newfoundland has won one Travelers title. That was claimed by Andrew Symonds and St. John’s Curling Club teammates Mark Healy, Cory Ewart and Keith Jewer in 2015.
