The Gander Flyers continued their worst-to-first transformation Sunday with a 5-3 win over the Clarenville Caribous in Central West Senior Hockey League play at the Eastlink Events Centre.
The Flyers are 6-0 so far this season, including a couple of wins in interlocking play with East Coast Senior Hockey League teams. That’s twice as many victories as Gander had all of last season, when they were last in the three-team CWSHL with a 3-9-2 record.
On Sunday, Brandon Hynes scored twice for the Flyers, while Jordan Escott had a goal and two assists.
Patrick O’Keefe and Andrew Ryan had the other tallies for Gander, while Brandon Roach, Dustin Russell and Keith Delaney scored for the Caribous, who had to settle for a split of a two-game homestand — they had downed the visiting Grand Falls-Windsor Cataracts 5-1 on Saturday.
It was a tough weekend on the road for the Cataracts (3-3, including interlocking games), who had lost 5-3 to the Flyers Friday night in Gander at the Steele Community Centre.
Those same two teams will meet next Saturday and Sunday in Grand Falls, while the Caribous (2-4) will play their first interlocking contests, hosting the ECSHL’s Northeast Eagles next Saturday night and St. John’s Caps on Sunday afternoon.
