The 2018 Akita Equipment Shield junior high school hockey competition in Conception Bay South is coming down to a third and deciding game.
The defending champion Villanova Vipers edges the Frank Roberts Ravens 4-3 Tuesday at the C.B.S. Arena to knot up what has been an extremely close series. The Ravens had won Sunday’s opening Game of the series by a 3-2 score.
Game 3 goes 8 p.m. Friday at the C.B.S. Arena.
The Akita Shield is one of three different best-of-three hockey championships held during the C.B.S. Winterfest. The others are the Fred Squires Shield and Annie Parsons Shield, involving the town’s senior high school teams.
The defending champions won Monday’s opening games of those two tournaments In Game 1 of the Parsons Shield women’s tourney, the Holy Spirit Falcons got by the Queen Elizabeth Pioneers 5-4 in overtime. The first game of the Squires Shield boys event saw the Pioneers down the Falcons 5-2. The second games of those series are set for today, with the girls’ contest at 6 p.m. followed by the boys’ game at 8 p.m.
