Alex Newhook of St. John’s has been named the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s rookie of the year in 2017-18.
The CJHL encompasses all the junior A circuits across Canada.
It’s the second straight year a player from Newfoundland has won the award, as Gander's Adam Dawe earned top rookie honours as a member of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s Notre Dame Hounds in 2016-17.
Dawe played for the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League this past season, and has committed to attend the University of Maine.
Toiling for the British Columbia Hockey League’s Victoria Grizzlies this season, Newhook was eighth in league scoring with 22 goals and 44 assists in 45 games.
He didn’t turn 17 until the end of January.
Newhook has committed to attend Boston College starting in 2019-20. However, there is a possibility he could join the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Halifax Mooseheads next season. The Mooseheads, who hold his major junior rights, will play host to the Memorial Cup next season.
Newhook was recently ranked No. 2 overall by The Hockey News for the 2019 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
