Defenceman James O’Brien of the Mount Pearl Blades junior hockey team is The Telegram sports department’s choice as athlete of the week.
O’Brien played a leading role in helping the Blades win a pair of games last weekend as the Mary Brown’s St. John’s Junior Hockey League opened its 2018-19 season.
In the season-opener Saturday night at the Goulds Arena, O’Brien collected three assists as the Blades defeated the homestanding Avalon Capitals 7-3.
The next night, as Mount Pearl staged its home-opener at The Glacier, O’Brien potted the winning goal in overtime as the Blades downed the C.B.N. Stars 5-4. He also picked up an assist.
