Newfoundland and Labrador won the silver medal in the four-team under-18 female division at the Atlantic Challenge Cup held over the weekend in New Brunswick.
The tournament, staged at Moncton’s Superior Propane Centre, is billed as Atlantic Canada’s High Performance hockey championship, and is part of the Hockey Canada program.
Teams in each of the four age groups from Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, P.E.I. and New Brunswick took part.
The U18 provincial women’s squad dropped a 7-3 decision to Nova Scotia in the final. Mackenzie Cahill, Shailynn Snow and Jennifer Bidgood scored in a losing cause.
The boys’ U15 team went 1-4 but won the bronze-medal game with a 3-2 decision over P.E.I. Nathan Casey netted a pair of goals for Newfoundland and Labrador. Owen Wright also scored.
The U16 girls were 1-4 and the U14 boys were winless in five starts.
