Avalon East Senior Hockey: Caps clinch finals berth vs. Eagles

It will be the St. John’s Caps and Northeast Eagles in the Avalon East Senior Hockey League final for a third straight year.The Toyota Plaza Caps, two-time defending champs, completed a sweep of the Bell Island Family Drug Mart Blues with a 7-3 win in Game 3 Sunday night at Rogers Bussey Arena to close out the best-of-five series in three straight.

Jon Caul and Mark Rideout both scored twice for the winners, whose Kyle Downer stopped 26 of 29 shots faced. Mike Druken, Jacob Lewis, and Cody Squires added singles for the Caps.

David Byrne scored all three Blues’ goals with Daniel Noftle drawing assists on each. Evan Giles was peppered with 41 shots in net for Bell Island.

The best-of-seven final gets underway next Friday night, 8 o’clock, at the Jack Byrne Arena, with Game 2 set for Saturday, 7:30 p.m., at Rogers Bussey.

In the six head-to-head meetings during the regular season, the Eagles won on five occasions.
