Jesse Putt scored a pair of goals — including the game-winner — and assisted on another as the St. Kevin’s Mavericks shaded the Marystown Clippers 5-4 Wednesday as the third annual Royal Newfoundland Regiment Memorial High School Hockey Tournament — the Beaumont Hamel Centennial Cup — continued at the Paradise Double Ice Complex.

Riley Spurrell had a goal and two assists for the Mavs.

In other games, the Gander Concordes doubled the Prince of Wales Collegiate Cavaliers 4-2, with Allen Follett scoring both PWC goals, and Matthew Antle netted a pair, including the game-winning goal, as Exploits Valley Eagles from Grand Falls-Windsor got by the Queen Elizabeth Pioneers from C.B.S. 3-2. In a fourth game, the Mount Pearl Senior High Huskies blanked Corner Brook High Titans 2-0.

The 16-team tournament, hosted by Holy Spirit High Falcons of C.B.S., concludes the round-robin Friday. The Trail of the Caribou championship playoff series opens Saturday morning with all 16 teams taking part, with four teams winning one of four Trail of the Caribou banners in honor of battles the Regiment fought in including Courtai, Masnieres, Monchy-le-Preus and Gueudecourt.

The four remaining teams will play in two semifinal games Sunday at 9 a.m., with the winners meeting in Sunday’s final which goes at 2 p.m.
