Sticking his neck out for Caribous
The Caribous, who became the second Newfoundland team to win the Allan Cup with a title four years ago in Kenora, Ont. — the Corner Brook Royals won the first national championship in 1986 — hope to become the first club from this province to win two titles.
Clarenville came close last year, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Dundas, Ont. Real McCoys in an extra session outside Hamilton, Ont.
At the Eastlink Events Centre Monday night, Dustin Russell and Matthew Thomey scored goals 12 seconds apart, and that was all Clarenville needed in their win over their guests from Lameque, N.B.
Big Matt Stefanishion led the winners with a pair of goals, and Andrew Sweetland scored once. Stefanishion, an Alberta native added to the Caribous’ roster for the Allan Cup, is a former five-year pro, which included 19 American Hockey League games.
Russell, the team captain and lone Clarenville native on the roster, got things going 4:05 after the opening face-off, capitalizing on a New Brunswick turnover and writing a quick shot past Andrew Sim. Thomey drew an assist on the play.
Then, just after the puck was dropped, Russell and Matt Quinn teamed to feed Thomey at the 4:17 mark.
Stefanishion went to work in the third period, scoring both his goals, followed by Sweetland. Phil Nazair had the lone New Brunswick goal in the final period of play.
Jason Churchill stopped 25 shots for the win. Sim was tested 43 times.
