If there are hockey players who need to know what it feels like to be traded, they might want to track down Cody Donaghey’s phone number.
Donaghey, the 22-year-old defenceman from St. John’s who spent most of last season with the ECHL’s Brampton Beast, is a member of the San Jose Sharks organization today after he was included in a Tuesday deal that saw him and forward Mike Hoffman sent to San Jose by the Ottawa Senators in exchange for forward Mikkel Boedker and rearguard prospect Julius Bergman.
It’s the eighth time in five-and-a-half years there’s been a trade in which Donaghey has been included.
A first-round selection of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in the 2012 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft, Donaghey’s first trade came in January of 2013 when the Huskies sent him to the Quebec Remparts.
He spent two-and-half seasons in Quebec City, but was on the move again in June of 2015, this time to the Halifax Mooseheads in a transaction that had been worked out in December, but wasn’t officially announced until just before that year’s QMJHL draft.
Then the Donaghey deals came in a flurry.
• Halifax to the Moncton Wildcats in December of 2015.
• Moncton to the Charlottetown Islanders in August of 2016
• Charlottetown  to the Val d’Or Foreurs in January of 2017, quickly followed by another trade three days later when the Foreurs flipped him to the Sherbrooke Phoenix
During that stretch, he was traded one other time. That was in February of 2016 when the Toronto Maple Leafs, who had signed Donaghey as an undrafted free agent, sent the then 19-year-old to Ottawa in the multi-player NHL deal that also made former Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf a Senators.
Donaghey turned pro last season, appearing in 54 ECHL games with the Beast, registering nine goals and seven assists. He also got into one American Hockey League game with the Belleville Senators.
This fall, he will enter the second year of the three-year entry-level deal he signed with Toronto.
The Sharks’ minor-league affiliates last season were the AHL’s San Jose Barracudas and the ECHL’s Allen (Tex.) Americans.
