The defending champions won the opening games Monday of the high school hockey tournaments that are fixtures of the Conception Bay South Winterfest.
In Game 1 of the Annie Parsons Shield women’s tourney at the C.B.S. Arena, the Holy Spirit Falcons got by the Queen Elizabeth Pioneers 5-4 in overtime. The first game of the Fred Squires Shield boys event, the Pioneers downed the Falcons 5-2.
The second games of the best-of-three series go Wednesday, with the girls’ contest at 6 p.m. followed by the boys’ game at 8 p.m.
