A late goal in the third period by the Brampton Beast gave the visitors a 4-2 win over the Newfoundland Growlers in the Growlers’ first-ever ECHL game.
Granted, it was an exhibition contest, played at the Stephenville Dome on the west coast Thursday night.
Matt Petgrave got the game-winner with three minutes left in the third on a shorthanded breakaway. Petgrave attended the Toronto Marlies’ AHL camp last week.
Semyon Babintsev opened scoring, staking the Growlers to a 1-0 lead when he tipped an Evan Neugold shot in the first period. Brampton replied in the opening frame, making it 1-1 after 20 minutes.
Latvian Kristians Rubins, who played for his home country in the world junior championship and world championship last year, scored the only goal of the second period as the Growlers carried a 2-1 lead into the final frame.
Rubins’ goal was set up by Jimmy Soper, who is in camp on a tryout and is the son of Newfoundland native Boyd Soper.
The Growlers then gave up three straight goals, including an empty-netter.
Eamon McAdam played the first period and a half in goal for the Growlers before making way for Mike Garteig.
