The ECHL’s Newfoundland Growlers have called a news conference for 10 a.m. Tuesday at The Delta in downtown St. John’s at which time team owner Dean MacDonald is expected to address the ongoing lease negotiations with Mile One Centre.
The Growlers will play the 2019-20 hockey season at Mile One, but anything beyond that is very much up in the air. MacDonald and the Growlers’ CEO, Glenn Stanford, have openly visited potential cities to relocate the team.
The Growlers are reportedly frustrated with the Mile One lease negotiations, to a point where some insiders are suggesting ownership is strongly considering a sale or relocation of the team after next season.
The news conference will come immediately after the Toronto Maple Leafs’ four-day training camp at the Paradise Double Ice Complex. Tuesday evening, the Leafs and Ottawa Senators will play an NHL exhibition game at Mile One.
Those events are directly related to the Maple Leafs-Growlers minor league partnership. Newfoundland is Toronto’s ECHL affiliate.
