You can bet there’s no happier hockey fan in the province than Washington Capitals superfan Dave ‘Fong’ Dowden of St. John’s, shown in his ‘Man Cave’ in this January, 2017 file photo.
Dowden told The Telegram in a feature on sports fans who cheer for unconventional sports teams that he became a fan of the Caps way back in 1974-75 when Washington was dreadful, and the Capitals had two Newfoundlanders on the roster, Tony White and Joe Lundrigan.
"That was it for me," said Dowden, from St. John's. “To have two Newfoundlanders playing on an NHL team in one season at that time was amazing.”
