Liam Hickey of St. John’s was named top defenceman at the 2019 IPC World Para Hockey Championship which finished up Sunday in Ostravia, Czech Republic, but the hardware he was probably looking for proved elusive.
The United States beat Canada 3-2 in overtime in the gold-medal game Sunday.
“It feels good,” Hickey said of his award. “I thought we had an awesome tournament as a team. I think this week was a big step forward in the process, focusing on Beijing in 2022, so I’m excited.
“Now we’re going to put a lot of work in this summer, and make sure we’re prepared for next season, starting with selection camp in September.”
Hickey scored a first-period power play goal for Canada.
The U.S. also beat Canada 3-1 in the round-robin. Canada neat Norway 14-2 and South Korea 4-0 before blanking the Koreans 10-0 in the semifinal.
