St. John’s, which liked its chances of winning the bid to play host to the 2020 world women’s hockey championship, has lost out to Halifax.
Hockey Canada announced Tuesday the IIHF world women’s championship will be staged in Halifax and Truro, N.S. in two years’ time.
Halifax played host to the 2004 tournament, won by Canada with a 2-0 victory over the United States in the gold-medal game.
In addition to the world women’s tournament, Halifax is also staging the 2019 Memorial Cup, hosted by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Mooseheads.
“They have a proven track record of hosting events of this caliber,” Hockey Canada president Scott Smith said of Halifax and Truro.
St. John's played host to the 4 Nations Cup women’s tournament in 2010, which drew 29,218 fans over eight games during the course of a week, a record at the time.
