The Mary Brown’s St. John’s Junior Hockey League final is a matchup most pundits predicted this season.
The Mount Pearl Blades and CBR Renegades will tangle for the league championship for the second year in a row after the Renegades dispatched the C.B.N. Stars 10-6 Wednesday night, taking their best-of-seven semifinal in five games.
The Blades swept the Trinity-Placentia Flyers in their semifinal series, following a first-round sweep of the St. John’s Caps.
Mount Pearl finished first in the regular season, just four points ahead f CBR. The Blades had 23 wins and the Renegades had 22.
At the C.B.S. Arena Wednesday, Blake Fudge led the Renegades with three goals, while Jacob Gill and Tyler Wall both scored twice. Nick David, Jim Kennedy and Tyler Nickson added singles. Replying for the Stars were Conal McNamara and Ryan Dawson with two each, Landon Trickett and Steve Moore.
On Tuesday night, the Blades competed their sweep of the Flyers with a 2-1 win at the Trinity-Placentia Stadium in Whitbourne.
Mitch McGrath potted the game-winning goal in the third period. James O’Brien also scored for the winners. William Hickey had the Flyers’ goal.
The winner of the junior league crown will represent the province at the Don Johnson Cup Atlantic junior ‘B’ championship in April in P.E.I.
BANTAM HOCKEY
The St. John’s Hitmen will be representing the province at the Atlantic bantam championship April 4-7 in St. Margaret’s Bay, N.S. following their provincial championship win Tuesday.
At the C.B.S. Arena, the Hitmen received goals from Justin Hepditch, Luca Rotondi and Stephen Ryder en route to a 3-2 win over the Tricom Thunder.
The tournament actually opened the weekend of March 8, but its completion was delayed following a carbon monoxide incident at Bussey Horwood Arena, where the tournament was originally staged.
