The St. Stephen Aces of the Maritime Hockey League released a statement today saying three of the team's players were involved in the accident that happened around suppertime Wednesday. The Aces say two of the players were treated and released from hospital but that a third remains in hospital in Saint John, N.B.

The RCMP say the three were in a vehicle that left the road, hit a power pole and rolled over. The Mounties said the player still in hospital has "potentially life-threatening injuries."

Neither the team or RCMP released the names of the players involved, only that two were 18 and that one was 19. However, numerous reports on social media, as well as sources within junior hockey, indicate the player still in hospital is Greene, an 18-year-old defenceman who recently joined the Aces after attending the training camp of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.

Greene played nine games with Cape Breton last season.

“Thoughts & prayers with former Eagles defenseman Scottie Greene who is in a coma after a car accident,” wrote Screaming Eagles broadcaster Patrick McNeil on his Twitter site, while St. John’s native and former Cape Breton captain Clark Bishop tweeted “Can't stop thinking about you ‪@ScottieGreene66 My thoughts and prayers going out for you and your family.. Love you brother”

The RCMP’s investigation is continuing, but the police have already said impairment is not believed to have been a factor in the accident.
