The Maritime Junior A Hockey League’s Amherst Ramblers have lost the services of forward, team captain and St. John’s native Marcus Cuomo for the remainder of the season.
Cuomo, who suffered a knee injury several weeks ago, was hoping to return to the lineup soon, but an MRI this weeks showed the damage to the knee was worse than expected.
“It’s a terrible loss for our team,” Ramblers coach and general manager Jeff LeBlanc said Thursday. “When the injury happened in mid-October, we were told it would only be two weeks. When he went for the MRI yesterday it was revealed the injury needed season-ending surgery, with no chance of a return”
LeBlanc said anytime a team loses a player like Cuomo, it’s a big blow that creates a big challenge for the rest of the team.
“Selfishly as a coach, you want your best players playing. In saying that, you have to worry about what you can control. Injuries like this one unfortunately are out of our control,” LeBlanc said. “Now other players need to step up not only on the ice but in the leadership department as well.
“I feel very bad for Marcus, he's a great kid that wanted to be in Amherst. Tough to see a player with that kind of character injured."
Cuomo joined the Ramblers from the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL after spending several seasons with them and the Saint John Sea Dogs. In eight games with Amherst, he had two goals and three assists for five points.
