Local high school hockey season gets underway

The Hickman Automotive Group St. John’s Metro High School Hockey League kicked off a new season over the weekend.

In St. John’s play Saturday night, Matthew Mills potted a pair of goals and Michael Fisher provided shutout goaltending as the Holy Heart Highlanders blanked the Gonzaga Vikings 4-0 at Twin Rinks.

Evan Reid and Zachary Sutton also scored for Holy Heart, and Thomas Hagan had three assists.

At the Jack Byrne Arena Friday night, Waterford Valley Warriors doubled the Holy Trinity Tigers 4-2. Curtis Heffernan led the assault with a goal and two assists. Michael Williams, Alex Noseworthy and Kyle O’Brien also scored. Matthew Senior and Cameron Sullivan replied.

In Metro play Friday night at the Paradise Arena, the Holy Spirit Falcons of C.B.S. staked the Mount Pearl Senior High Huskies to an early 1-0 lead, but stormed back with three straight goals for a 3-1 win.

Noah Lambert, Braeden Griffiths, with the game-winner, and Dylan Boland, with an insurance marker, scored for Mount Pearl. Zach Yetman scored for the Huskies.

In another metro tilt Friday at the Robert French Memorial Stadium in C.B.S., Ascension Collegiate Astros of Bay Roberts blanked Queen Elizabeth Pioneers of C.B.S. 7-0.

The Astros won the Oktoberfest high school tournament — hosted by Mount Pearl’s O’Donel Patriots — 6-2 last week over the Falcons.

The Battle of Mount Pearl resumes 8 o’clock tonight at The Glacier with the Patriots clashing with the Huskies.
