A man who has been synonymous with the St. John’s Junior Hockey League since its start in 1984 passed away Monday evening.

Bern Tobin was 77.

Tobin served in every executive position in the league, from president to vice-president, secretary-treasurer, public relations and registrar, his position at the time of his death.

“He was everything to the league,” said current junior hockey president George Bursell. “He was around since Day 1.”

At the time of his death, Tobin was also recording secretary for Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador’s Junior Council.

He was also part of the management team of previous St. John’s Maple Leafs squads in the Newfoundland and Labrador Major Midget Hockey League.

“I lost a dear friend,” Bursell said. “Junior hockey lost a dear friend. He can’t be replaced.”
