Major midget hockey: Tri Pen earns five out of six points in weekend play

Andrew Antle scored a game-tying goal with less than four minutes remaining in regulation to force the need for extra time and the Western Kings went on to defeat the Tri-Pen Osprey 6-5 in a shootout Sunday in Newfoundland and Labrador Major Midget Hockey League action at the Bay Arena in Bay Roberts.

The result denied the Osprey a chance at a perfect three-win weekend — Tri-Pen had defeated the East Coast Blizzard 6-3 Friday and the Kings 5-3 on Saturday — but the five points they picked up did move them even with the Blizzard, points-wise, in the league standings.

On Sunday, Liam Smith scored two goals for the Kings, while Kyle Robinson contributed three assists. Matthew Brown had a hat trick for Tri Pen, while Liam Leonard added three helpers. In the Osprey’s win Saturday, Leonard had scored four of his team’s five goals.

Meanwhile, in Lewisporte, the league-leading St. John’s Maple Leafs registered two wins over the Central IcePak, edging the home side 5-4 Saturday on Nathan Kenny’s third-period goal, then following up with a 5-2 victory Sunday.

The Leafs have already clinched first place, and their lead over second-place Western has been extended to a whopping 24 points.
