Many of Newfoundland and Labrador's top hockey players will be having a ball this week

CBHA national championships begin in metro St. John's today with over 130 players on N.L. entries

Zach O’Brien scored the game-winning goal at 18:31 of the third period Saturday night as the Newfoundland Growlers trimmed the Manchester Monarchs 4-2 to even the North Division final at a game apiece.

Some of Newfoundland and Labrador’s most familiar hockey players will be hitting the floor instead of the ice this week in St. John’s and Mount Pearl.

The Canadian Ball Hockey Association is holding three 2019 national championships — men’s A, women’s A and masters — in the metro area beginning today, and the host province will be well-represented by six teams, two in each division.

The Black Horse men’s team — which was runner-up in the 2018 nationals — features two members of the ECHL Newfoundland Growlers — forwards Zach O’Brien and Marcus Power, as well as Cody Donaghey, the top-scoring defenceman for the ECHL’s Orlando Solar Bears last season.

Recent Memorial Cup champions Jordan Maher and Adam Holwell are on the team, as well as forward Jesse Sutton, who like Maher, is graduating from the major junior ranks to play for the University of Prince Edward Island next season.

The bulk of the Black Horse roster consists of Newfoundland senior league players, including goalies Mark Yetman and Scott Bray, defencemen Patrick O’Keefe and Mike Dyke; and forwards Danny Wicks, Jeremy Nicholas, Jordan Escott and former Montreal Canadiens first-rounder Terry Ryan.

The roster also features two players from Manitoba, defenceman Paul Kastes and forward Remi Laurenccelle; each team at the nationals is allowed three pick-ups from outside of its province.

The other Newfoundland and Labrador men’s team is largely made up of players from central Newfoundland and the Bonavista Peninsula, including forwards Adam Dawe, the Gander native playing for the University of Maine, and Bonavista’s Scott Trask, who spent most of last season in the Southern Professional Hockey League after beginning the campaign in the ECHL with the Growlers.

NL United, the province’s top-ranked team in the women’s division has three players — Dawn Tulk, Kristen Cooze and April Drake — who were part of Canada’s gold medal-winning team at the most-recent world women’s championship in Slovakia, as well as former national team player Amanda Kean.

AUS player Katie Peddle and one-time NCAA Division One standout Rebecca Russell, the former head coach of the Newfoundland senior hockey league’s Clarenville Caribous, are also with the United.

Newfoundland’s second women’s entry has a younger roster, highlighted by forward Ashley Stratton, coming off an outstanding rookie season with the University of New Brunswick Reds.

The Colonial Selects, one of the Newfoundland teams competing for the masters title, features a number of players who would be familiar to followers of local senior hockey, including Donnie Gosse, Dale Sullivan, Jamie Tobin and Ryan Delaney.

Longtome local standout Bob Dawson is part of the province’s second masters side, NL Cabot, as is one-time national ball hockey team goaltender Chris Feltham.

Feltham is actually part of two rosters this week — he’s also listed on the men’s A host side. The same goes for Terry Ryan, who is also part of the Colonial Selects in masters play.

Action begisn 10 o'clock this morning at both the Goulds Arena and Mount Pearl Glacier, then continues throughout the day and evening at both facilities.
