Maple Leafs, Osprey tops in provincial major midget hockey tourney

The St. John’s Maple Leafs and Tri-Pen Osprey both posted a 3-1 records over the weekend in the first of four Newfoundland Major Midget Hockey League tournaments scheduled for the 2014-15 season.The five-team midget circuit staged a pre-season tournament, and each team will play host to a tournament this year in addition to the regular league schedule.

The Central IcePak foiled the Leafs’ chances at a perfect record, scoring a 4-2 win over St. John’s at the Goulds Arena on Thanksgiving Day Monday.

Scottie Greene led the IcePak attack with two goals. Kyle Champion and Jared Lush netted singles. Matthew Smith and Grant Thompson replied.

The Osprey registered a 5-0 shutout win over the Western Kings Monday morning at the Goulds rink.

Conal McNamara led the winners with a pair of goals. Andrew Churchill, Ryan Dawson and Cass Warren netted singles.

The IcePak and Western Kings were both 2-2, and the St. John’s Privateers were winless in four games.
