A group of young black activists has withdrawn its invitation for Montreal police chief Sylvain Caron to meet with them at Sunday’s demonstration to protest police brutality in the wake of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis .
La ligue des noirs nouvelle génération said it was withdrawing the invitation because it has lost confidence in the police.
A tweet from the SPVM said it respected the group’s decision and said it would be on-hand Sunday to ensure the safety of the demonstrators.
The event begins at 10 a.m. at Place Émilie-Gamelin next to the Berri-UQAM métro station.
