Entries from Newfoundland and Labrador will play for gold medals today at the Canadian Ball Hockey championships being conducted in Winnipeg.
In the men’s senior A division final, NL Black Horse will face the defending champions Edmonton Savages. Black Horse — a bronze medallist at the nationals in 2017 — blanked the hometown Manitoba Selects 7-0 in a Friday semifinal after downing the Saskatoon Buffalo 5-1 in quarter-final play earlier in the day.
The Newfoundlanders will be looking for a measure of revenge against Edmonton. The Savages defeated Black Horse in a semifinal at last year's Canadian championship and also edged them 4-3 in their opening game in preliminary play in Winnipeg. That was N.L.’s only regulation-time loss this week.
Meanwhile, Colonial Auto Parts of St. John’s will chase down a masters men’s (40-plus) crown as it takes on the Alberta Havoc in the championship game today.
The Newfoundland team, which was runner-up in the Canadian championships last year, is undefeated through four games in Winnipeg, having gone 3-0 in preliminary play (without allowing a goal) and earning a direct bye to Friday’s semifinals where they blasted Team Saskatchewan 10-4.
The masters final is 2:30 p.m. NT, while the senior men’s championship tilt is at 6:30 p.m. NT.
