Newfoundland Growlers have been perfect on the penalty kill the last three weeks

Team hasn't allowed a power-play goal in the last 27 opposition opportunities

Corrects start time of Saturday's game

The Newfoundland Growlers now have the second-best penalty kill in the ECHL.

That’s the sort of thing that happens when you don’t give up a power-play goal for three weeks.

The Growlers’ penalty-kill succeed rate stands at 89.2 per cent, bettered only by the Cincinnati Cyclones, who come in at 90.9 per cent.

Newfoundland shot up the charts in that category by not allowing a single power-play goal in the last 27 opposition opportunities, including the entirety of a recent five-game road trip.

They last allowed a power-play marker Nov. 7 against the Worcester Railers.

The Growlers actually did better offensively than their opponents when killing penalties during the recent road swing. That’s because Newfoundland forward Scott Pooley scored the franchise’s first shorthanded goal in a 3-0 win over the Solar Bears in Orlando, Fla., last Friday.

The Growlers (14-6-1), who continue to sit first overall in the ECHL standings, put their penalty-killing prowess on the line as they host the Brampton Beast for a pair of weekend games, Saturday and Sunday at Mile One Centre. Saturday's game is 7 p.m. Sunday’s game goes at 4 p.m.
