Anyone named Kelly is sure to be popular in these parts. So you know the Newfoundland Growlers will be anxious to show off their new friend.
The Growlers, newly-stamped as ECHL champions, will hold a parade through downtown St. John’s this evening with the league championship trophy, the Kelly Cup, on full display.
The procession, featuring Growlers players, staff and invited guests, is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. at Mile One Centre before heading west to Waldegrave Street, the down to Harbour Drive, before turning on Job’s Cove/Prescott Street then on to Duckworth Street. From Duckworth, the parade will eventually make its way to New Gower Street, moving back to Mile One Centre before turning onto Queen St. and finishing up on George Street, where a fan rally will be held at Prince Edward Plaza (George Street Stage).
Timing of the event is purposeful. It's starting after the conclusion of the normal work day and allows for live coverage by the supper-hour news programs of CBC and NTV.
The route, of course, does not include Water Street because of the ongoing construction there.
An alternate location for the rally may be announced should unfavourable weather conditions arise. The forecast is calling for partial clearing this evening after showers during the day.
