St. John’s native Alex Newhook had an assist in helping Team Canada West to a 3-1 win over the Czech Republic Sunday at the World Junior A Hockey Challenge in Bonnyville, Alta.
Newhook had four points — all on assists — for Canada West at the tournament.
The United States won gold, blanking Russia 2-0 in the final.
The Americans had defeated Team Canada West in overtime in the semifinal round. In preliminary play, Canada West had downed the U.S. in a shootout.
The 17-year-old Newhook (he turns 18 next month) normally plays for the Victoria Grizzlies of the British Columbia Hockey League. The captain of the Grizzlies, Newhook is committed to play for Boston College next season and is seen as a top prospect for the 2019 National Hockey League Entry Draft.
Newhook, who was one of eight 17-year-olds on the Canada West roster, was an assistant captain on the team.
